Myth # 1
Only Do Cardio If You Want To Get Lean
Only doing cardio is excellent…if you want to be skinny fat! What’s “skinny fat”? A person who is skinny fat looks slim, but they have no muscle tone and are soft and squishy to touch, like a marshmallow.
Focusing on long cardio sessions whether they are on a treadmill, elliptical machine or running outdoors will cause you to lose weight. But if this is your only form of exercise you will be losing fat and muscle. You will end up looking like a smaller version of yourself now, but be soft and squishy. Especially if you’re not eating properly.
To avoid this you want to include some form of resistance training to help build lean muscle and focus on higher intensity, this way your training becomes strength-cardio. Building nice lean muscle while burning fat at the same time. Circuit training is an excellent example.

I love salmon, it’s an excellent source of protein, it’s full of omega-3 essential fatty acids and it contains a powerful antioxidant called astaxanthin which mops up free radicals. Even if you’re not a fan of salmon, that’s not a problem because you can’t even taste it. Plus these burgers are so moist and juicy I’m sure they will become a regular addition to your menu.
For those who may not be familiar with Miranda Kerr, she is an Australian Supermodel and one of the Victoria’s Secret “Angels” along with fellow top supermodels Heidi Klum, Adriana Lima and Gisele. Why am I talking about her? Because Miranda is in great shape, and while she is a model and very slim, she’s also very fit and healthy. Which isn’t always the case with models. Also, she gave birth to her first child in January and the above picture was taken in August!

Depending on your goals you may choose to focus more on resistance training or cardio but ideally you should aim to incorporate both for maximum benefits. If you are planning on doing both in the same session the next logical question is which should be done first? This can be a source of confusion as there is often conflicting theories, fortunately I’m going to help clear things up.

Tomatoes are one of those foods we’re all familiar with and know are good for us, but definitely don’t get the major respect they deserve. They contain Vitamin C, potassium, B vitamins, lutein (healthy eyes), biotin (healthy hair), they’re a source of fibre, low in calories and most importantly they are a rich source of lycopene…

This recipe was inspired by a comment Ray left on my Healthy Cereal Recipe post. So I set out to see if I could make a bar version of that recipe and after a bit of tweaking I think I got it just right. But be warned they definitely taste like “more”!

Starting this week I’m going to be focusing on one health food that you may or may not currently eat. The idea is to encourage us to eat a wider variety of foods and to try at least one new food each week.
First up – avocado. Avocados are excellent for your health, not only are they a great source of fibre, healthy fat and antioxidants but they can also be beneficial in lowering cholesterol. Not to mention how good they are for your skin and eyes! You may also be surprised to learn the avocado is actually a fruit and not a vegetable.
