Salmon Burgers Recipe

I love salmon, it’s an excellent source of protein, it’s full of omega-3 essential fatty acids and it contains a powerful antioxidant called astaxanthin which mops up free radicals. Even if you’re not a fan of salmon, that’s not a problem because you can’t even taste it. Plus these burgers are so moist and juicy I’m sure they will become a regular addition to your menu.

Cardio Or Weights – Which First?

Depending on your goals, you may choose to focus more on resistance training or cardio. Ideally you should aim to incorporate both for maximum benefits. If you are planning on doing both in the same session, the next logical question is which should be done first? This can be a source of confusion, as there are often conflicting theories. Fortunately, I’m going to help clear things up.

Health Food Of The Week – Tomato

Tomatoes are one of those foods we’re all familiar with and know are good for us, but definitely don’t get the major respect they deserve. They contain Vitamin C, potassium, B vitamins, lutein (healthy eyes), biotin (healthy hair), they’re a source of fibre, low in calories and most importantly they are a rich source of lycopene…

Healthy Granola Bites

This recipe was inspired by a comment Ray left on my¬†Healthy Cereal Recipe post. So I set out to see if I could make a bar version of that recipe and after a bit of tweaking I think I got it just right. But be warned they definitely taste like “more”!

Health Food Of The Week – Avocado

Starting this week I’m going to be focusing on one health food that you may or may not currently eat. The idea is to encourage us to eat a wider variety of foods and to try at least one new food each week.

First up – avocado. Avocados are excellent for your health, not only are they a great source of fibre, healthy fat and antioxidants but they can also be beneficial in lowering cholesterol. Not to mention how good they are for your skin and eyes! You may also be surprised to learn the avocado is actually a fruit and not a vegetable.

Healthy Cereal Recipe

Cereal. I used to eat a lot of it when I was growing up. Eventually I gave it up completely and switched over to oatmeal. But from time to time the idea of some crunchy cereal really appeals to me, and this recipe works perfectly for those occasions. It’s also a great healthy alternative to the processed, pre-packaged, high sugar/salt cereals that you buy. Best of all it tastes great!

Quinoa – A High Protein Alternative To Grains

You may or may not be familiar with quinoa (pronounced keen-wah). It’s relatively new to most people but has been cultivated in South America for over 5,000 years. The ancient Incas considered it sacred, referring to it as the “mother grain”.

Quinoa looks like a grain, tastes like a grain and you cook it like a grain. But it’s not a grain, it’s actually a seed from a leafy green plant distantly related to spinach.

So Why Should You Be Eating Quinoa

Fructose – Obesity’s Secret Weapon!

Most people will tell you that a little sugar isn’t all that bad and that it’s found in nature. I agree. The problem is that we don’t just eat a little sugar and the type we do eat is a whole lot different to the form of sugar found in nature.

When we eat sugar (either as a starchy carbohydrate or refined sugar) our pancreas releases insulin. Insulin helps to remove the sugar from our blood stream and it is either used for energy or stored as fat. How much we “burn off” or store as fat depends on our daily activity level. The more active we are the more energy we use. Straight forward enough? Maybe not.
