Make The Most of Strawberry Season
Strawberries are back in season, and super sweet!
Strawberries are a great source of many beneficial compounds, including vitamins, minerals, polyphenols, and fibre. The fact that they also taste great, is a bonus.
Speaking of taste, strawberries are at their very best when in season. They are generally available year round now, but the quality and taste can be a bit hit and miss, especially in the colder months were they have to be imported. Luckily, that’s a problem for another day, because it’s strawberry season right now!
Some quick strawberry benefits
Strawberries are a rich source of vitamin C. 100g of strawberries contain over 70% of our recommended daily intake. That’s more vitamin C than oranges. Vitamin C is used by the body to produce collagen, which helps keep our skin, veins, eyes, and immune system healthy.
These heart shaped berries are a source of heart healthy potassium.
Strawberries are good for our skin. Not only are they high in vitamin C, they also contain a phytochemical called ellagic acid, that helps reduce collagen breakdown. Collagen keeps skin plump, smooth, and youthful.
Strawberries are a source of powerful senolytic agent fisetin. Fisetin helps protect the mitochondia, the powerhouses of or cells, from oxadative stress, working as an antioxidant. It also boost our glutithione production, known as the body’s master antioxidant. Of the foods tested, strawberries had the highest levels of fisetin.
